CLUB POLICIES

Alcoholic Beverages: Employees of the Union League are prohibited from serving alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears intoxicated. Consumption of alcoholic beverages on Union League premises by anyone under the age of twenty-one is prohibited.

Animals: Guide animals for the handicapped are welcome in the League House. Other animals are prohibited.

Business Papers: The discreet display of business papers is permitted, but discouraged, in the member dining rooms, hallways and lounges. Private rooms are available for business meetings.

Coat and Belongings Check-In: Outerwear and coats, clothing bags, luggage larger than brief or attaché cases, athletic equipment bags, backpacks, strollers, shopping bags, and similar items must be checked in the coat rooms.

Cell Phones, PDAs, Laptops, Digital Readers: Cell phones, personal digital assistants, laptops, and other similar devices may only be used in the Business Center or private meeting rooms except that the brief and discrete use of cell phones and PDAs are permitted, but discouraged, in the Old Café and the main hallways. Reading with digital readers is permitted in all areas of the League house. The use of speakerphones is prohibited, and all cell phone, PDA, and laptop alerts must be silenced throughout the League House except in private rooms.

Children: Well behaved and properly dressed children are always welcome in the League House. Children under the age of twenty-one must be accompanied at all times by a member who is responsible for the children's decorum and compliance with the Rules of the House Committee, including the dress code.

Children under the age of twenty-one are not permitted in the Old Café.

Children over the age of five may dine in the 1862 dining room. Otherwise, children under the age of twelve may dine only in the following dining rooms and at the following times.

  • Breakfast in the Founders Room, every day
  • Monthly Sunday Champagne Brunch
  • Lunch in the Founders Room, Monday through Friday
  • Lunch in the Café Meredith Dining Room, Saturday and Sunday
  • Dinner in the Café Meredith Dining Room, every day

Children Strollers and Infant Carriers: All strollers must be checked and left in a coat room. Strollers are not permitted in any dining room. Infant carriers are permitted in the dining rooms. The Union League has highchairs and booster chairs for children.

Complaints and Suggestions: Complaints or suggestions regarding service or Union League operations may be directed only to the General Manager or the Chair of the House Committee, preferably in writing.

Discrimination and Harassment: It is Union League policy to provide to members, guests, employees, and vendors an environment in the League House and at Union League-sponsored functions, on or off premises, free from all unlawful forms of discrimination, intimidation, or harassment, including sexual harassment. Any member whose conduct is inconsistent with such policy will be subject to disciplinary action, including possible termination of Union League membership.

Dress Code: It is the intention of the dress code to provide guidelines within which each Member is expected to demonstrate discretion and good judgment. It is the responsibility of each member to conform to the dress code and to ensure that family members and guests do so as well. All children in the League House are expected to be appropriately attired, and children over the age of twelve are required to conform to the dress code.

For men:

Jacket and collared shirt are required at all times on the first floor members-only section of the League House. Jacket and tie are preferred.

For women:

Dresses, blouses and skirts, or pants suit are appropriate attire. Pants should be tailored and are acceptable when worn with a jacket or other garments which would be appropriate if worn with a skirt.

Exceptions:

  • 1862 Dining Room and Bar: Jacket required at all times (including summer). Jacket and tie are strongly preferred
  • Breakfast: Business casual attire is acceptable in the Founders Room or Café Meredith for breakfast only.
  • Saturday and Sunday: Business casual attire is acceptable on Saturday until 5:00pm and all day Sunday in the Café throughout the year.
  • Private Dining/Meeting Rooms: Business casual attire is acceptable in private meeting rooms or for private dining events.
  • Summer Dress: Except for the 1862 dining room and bar, business casual attire may be worn throughout the League House from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
  • Business casual attire: Defined as a collared shirt and pressed slacks for men and comparable attire for women.

Unacceptable Attire: The following attire is never acceptable on the first or second floors of the League House: jeans, denim wear, tee shirts, athletic wear, tank, halter, or jogging tops, untucked shirts, wrinkled clothing, shorts, baseball caps, sneakers, extremely casual or beach footwear.

Members and guests staying at the Inn of the League or using the Fitness Center may enter and leave the League House in attire that would not otherwise comply with the Rules of the House Committee only to go to or leave from the Fitness Center or the overnight rooms only by using the Sansom Street entrance and the elevators to and from the overnight rooms.

Fitness Center: The use of the Fitness Center and the adjoining locker rooms is complimentary for all members and their spouses. There are day lockers available or you can arrange for an executive locker that will be billed annually to your member account. If you would like to bring a guest to use the Fitness Center, they need to sign in with the attendant. There is a guest fee of $10 that will be charged to your member account. If you are just using the locker area as a changing station please be considerate of your fellow members who are using the facilities. If you need something stored, such as a garment bag, please see the attendant. Do not leave your belongings in the changing stalls as they are there for all the members using the facilities. Please limit the number of guests you are bringing to use the changing facilities and ask them to adhere to the same policies you are when using the space.

Gratuities: The Union League is generally a non-tipping institution. Tips may be given only to parking lot attendants, the barber, and the shoe shine person.

Guest and Sponsor Responsibilities: Members hosting guests are responsible for the deportment of their guests and all charges incurred by them and costs incurred as a result of damage to the League House or its contents. Members may not host more than eight guests in the League House at the same time, except at private dining events or with the written permission of the General Manager. Guests must sign the guest register and be accompanied by their host. Guests may be hosted at the League House no more than six times per year for regular dining or member events. The Union League reserves the right to deny access to any guest. No person whose membership has been terminated by the Union League, or who resigned other than in good standing, may enter the League House except with the written permission of the General Manager.Cash bars are restricted to private events held in a private room. Please Note:Only one guest per member is permitted in the Smoking Room during high volume events, such as Junior Happy Hour, New Year's Day Open House, Lincoln Day, etc. and the member must remain with their guest while in the Smoking Room.

Inn at the League: Member-sponsored guests and reciprocal guests may use the Inn at the League. While staying at the Inn at the League, guests may use the entire League House. All Inn guests are subject to the Rules of the House Committee and must settle their account upon departure by using a credit card or having the charges posted to a pre-authorized members account.

Loss of Property: Although the Union League does provide facilities for hats, coats, briefcases, umbrellas, and similar belongings of members and guests, the Union League is not responsible for any loss of, or damage to, any member or guest property.

Membership Rosters: Information in membership rosters including rosters of Union League committees, affinity clubs, and club tables are for the private and personal use of members and may be used to communicate only with members who have a personal relationship with the sender. Any other use of member information obtained from membership rosters, including solicitations, publicity, or the like, is prohibited. Members may not distribute rosters to any entity or to any person who is not a member. A committee, affinity club, or club table may adopt rules specific to the use of information in its roster that supersede the Rules of the House Committee except for the prohibition against the distribution of the rosters to entities or to persons who are not members only if the committee, affinity club, or club table notifies its members of such rules and permits its members to opt out of such rules. A violation of such committee, affinity club, or club table specific rules is a violation of the Rules of the House Committee.

Private Dining Rooms: Member-sponsored guests and reciprocal guests are permitted to use the private dining rooms. Members sponsoring private functions are responsible for the deportment of their guests and all charges incurred by them and costs incurred as a result of damage to the League House or its contents. Guests invited to a private function are not permitted to use the Library, the members' dining rooms, or the members-only section of the first floor of the League House, including the Business Center and Old Café.

Reciprocal Guests: Reciprocal guests must obtain a guest card at the concierge desk. The card is valid 14 consecutive days and may be renewed for an additional 14-days with a new letter of introduction from your club. All reciprocal guests are subject to the Rules of the House Committee and must settle their account by credit card at the end of their visit.

Smoking: Smoking is permitted only in the Smoking Room located on the first floor of Broad Street, except as may otherwise be provided for specific Union League-sponsored events. Please Note: There is no smoking or drinking on the outside portico on Broad Street.

Solicitation: Member solicitation of fellow members is strongly discouraged. Unwanted member solicitation of fellow members and guests, member solicitation of fellow members or guests who do not have a personal relationship with the member, and any guest solicitation of members or other guests are prohibited. Member or guest solicitation of autographs from members or guests (other than to sign the guest register) is prohibited. Providing access to the League House and its membership to non-members for commercial or promotional benefit is allowed only with the written permission of the General Manager.

Sponsoring Functions: A member sponsor is required for all private functions.

Spousal Privileges: The spouse of a living member (or widow or widower of a deceased member who has not remarried) is entitled to House privileges, unless otherwise directed in writing by the member. Upon payment of a fee set by the House Committee, the spouse may have a separate billing account. The member remains responsible for the payment of all charges incurred by his or her spouse and costs incurred as a result of damage to the League House or its contents.

Use of Logo and Name: The logo and other trademarks of the Union League may be used only with the written permission of the General Manager. Members are prohibited from using the name of the Union League for personal or commercial promotional purposes.

Violations of the Rules of the House Committee, Improper Conduct: Improper conduct and violations of the Rules of the House Committee may be reported to the General Manager or to the Chair of the House Committee. The House Committee will investigate the reported conduct and recommend any disciplinary action to the Board of Directors.
