Veterans March Roundup

Veterans Club Table
The Veterans Club Table held its first Annual Meeting in January. After enjoying a wonderful lunch the attendees reviewed and adopted an inaugural set of Bylaws and received reports from Secretary Brad Mills and Treasurer Bob Ciaruffoli. Chris D’Ascenzo, Chair of the Philanthropy Committee, then proposed three local veteran-service non-profit organizations as potential recipients of our charitable gift for 2014. After a lively discussion of the candidates, the members voted to award a gift of $2,000 to the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Center (www.pvmsec.org) which provides a variety of support and educational services to veterans in our community. We will present the check to the VMSC during a tour of the facility in early March, which will be followed by a happy hour. New business included the dragooning/shanghai appointment of our first Judge Advocate, Tim Potero, Esq., who graciously agreed to serve in that post, as well as a discussion of potential social events for 2015.

Veterans Initiative Sponsors Professional Attire Drive – May 18
For veterans and transitioning military members, buying professional clothing can be an expense beyond reach. Yet, looking sharp means feeling sharp, and confidence is key to getting that job and building a career. In response to Union League members’ strong interest in helping veterans present the best professional image, the Veterans Initiative will hold an attire drive at the Union League on Monday, May 18, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. League members are invited to bring their gently-used, cleaned, men’s and women’s suits, shirts/blouses, ties, belts and shoes, to the Grant Room East. The Professional Attire Drive Committee, Chaired by Michael Muscarella, will distribute the clothing on Tuesday, May 19 at the Drexel University Paul Peck Alumni Center at 32nd and Market Streets. In addition to some 800 student veterans at Drexel, the Veterans Initiative will work with our 40+ veterans service organizations to welcome vets from across the city to attend.

We are pleased to support League veterans Bob Ciaruffoli, profiled February 13 the Philadelphia Business Journal as, “The U.S. Marine Who Will Welcome the Pope,” and Alex Gorsky, CEO of Johnson and Johnson, who will be guest of honor at the Journal’s Thursday, March 19 Veterans of Influence Awards at the Union League.
