History
In 1946, the Union League established the Committee on Youth Work to demonstrate its motto, "Love of Country Leads," and to motivate young people in the 14-17 age group to set high personal standards of behavior and leadership as they mature into responsible citizens. In 1971, Youth Work was formalized by the creation of a trust known today as The Youth Work Foundation of the Union League of Philadelphia. The Foundation is an organization described in section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code; therefore, contributions qualify as deductible charitable contributions for federal income tax, estate, tax and gift tax purposes. The committee on Youth Work continues as the program arm of the foundation.
The Work of Youth Work
The Good Citizenship Award
Each year, with the help of 53 selected youth agencies, 290 young men and women are named to receive the League's Good Citizenship Award. The youth are chosen without regard to race, color, creed, gender or political background but must have demonstrated marked evidence of good citizenship.
The annual Youth Work Day in May features a morning of presentations and workshops under the direction of the Freedoms Foundation. The afternoon includes special programs at The National Constitution Center. The highlight of the day is the Award Banquet which is attended by many Union League members and special guests.
The Good Citizenship Award has been presented to nearly 13,000 young people. Many have become leaders in their chosen business or profession and some have become Union League members who help perpetuate this unique outreach program.
Spirit of America Program
Since 1994, The Youth Work Foundation has annually awarded scholarships to 20 good Citizenship Award winners to attend a three-day Spirit of America Program at the Valley Forge campus of Freedoms Foundation. Students attending have a greater insight into the freedoms they enjoy as Americans and the responsibilities they bear as citizens.
Mentoring Program
In 1999, a mentoring program was established through which the talents of Union League members are used to assist the non-profit agencies affiliated with Youth Work in areas such as special events, communications and technology.
Internship Program
In an effort to encourage students to remain in Philadelphia after graduation and to provide additional benefits to Good Citizenship Award recipients, Youth Work has established an Internship Program. This initiative will match talented high school and college students with companies that would like to utilize the skills of these young people.
Support for the Scholarship Foundation
Since 1956, recipients of the Good Citizenship Award have been eligible to apply for financial aid for post high school education through The Scholarship Foundation of the Union League of Philadelphia. Annually, 25 applicants receive grants of $1,000 which can be renewed each year for a maximum grant of $4,000. Youth Work has financially supported the scholarship program since the program's inception.
Support for Youth Work
Annual Solicitation
Each fall, the Foundation asks Union League members for their support for the current fiscal year, which runs from July 1 - June 30. The response has always been gratifying and the solicitation is the largest source of funding for Youth Work. Club Table members have traditionally been among the most generous contributors and in order to recognize this achievement, a special award, The Brodhead Cup, was inaugurated in 1989.
It was first presented to George Brodhead, a former Union League President and a 42-year member of the Committee on Youth Work and has been presented annually to the Club Table "…whose service to the Committee on Youth Work best emulates the contributions of George M. Brodhead."
Corporate Sponsorships
A growing source of income for Youth Work is Corporate Sponsorships, an excellent way for area businesses to support this outreach program. Sponsors are offered space in the Good Citizenship Award Dinner program book, preferred seating at the dinner and table signage.
Bequests
Bequests provide a meaningful way to provide important support for Youth Work. Youth Work can be included in a new will or simply added as a codicil to an existing will. Gifts of cash, appreciated stock or a percentage of the remainder of an estate are frequently used methods of making a charitable gift through a bequest.
